When AI Enters the Visit, Clinicians Need Words for It

Clinician conversations this week pointed to a higher bar for education: it needs to help learners execute, verify, explain, and act.
Several otherwise unrelated sources pointed to the same signal this week: clinicians value education that helps them do the work, not just absorb what changed. The pattern is cross-context but still directional, with some organization-owned sources in the mix; the strength is repetition across settings, not proof of broad market consensus.
Across menopause care, oncology nursing, and pediatric hospital medicine, the common preference was for teaching that gets operational quickly: case-based practice, specific tips, role-level decisions, and tools that can be used in clinic. In one discussion, clinicians responded most strongly when education moved beyond safety or evidence review into dosing, practical choices, and how to start; in another, scenario-based learning was framed as the bridge from theory to application; and in a pediatric hospital medicine faculty-development conversation, educators emphasized interactive, case-based sessions with specific tools for busy clinical settings (FDA discussion, ONS Voice, MedEd Thread).
For CME providers, this matters because a strong evidence review may no longer feel complete on its own. The practical test is whether the activity shows the learner how to act on the information: what decision to make, what sequence to follow, what to say, what tool to use, and where the common failure points are. That builds on an earlier brief on when clinical guidance outruns the static course, but this week the pressure is less about speed and more about teaching execution inside the activity itself.
The implication for CME teams: review upcoming agendas and faculty briefs for one simple test—does each session teach a behavior the learner could perform next week, or mainly summarize what the faculty knows?
The AI thread this week was narrower than generic adoption talk. The most credible use case presented was help reconciling conflicting guidance while showing sources that can be checked. A Medscape-hosted demo described value in summarizing multiple guidelines, exposing references, and helping clinicians inspect where a recommendation came from; a caregiver- and research-oriented discussion reinforced the same expectation of reduced search burden paired with visible sources and verification (Medscape demo, Wellness Wednesday).
This remains an emerging, directional signal, and the evidence base is limited; one source is product-adjacent and the other is not strong independent clinician discourse. Still, it sharpens a useful design point for CME providers: AI education is more defensible when it teaches learners how to inspect synthesis under disagreement than when it offers a broad tour of tools. If the examples are oncology-led, the provider implication is broader wherever clinicians face multiple guidelines, payer constraints, or contested pathways.
The implication for CME teams: if you are teaching AI, build around one or two bounded tasks such as comparing conflicting recommendations, checking citations, and judging source provenance—not around capability overviews.
This week’s communication evidence was more specific than a general call for better bedside communication. The sharper point was that clinicians need training on how to adjust explanation depth, choose formats that match literacy and preference, include family when needed, and use nurses or other team members to reinforce understanding over time. One oncology discussion stressed that written materials alone are often inadequate and that clinicians may need videos, diagrams, plain-language support, or family involvement; another provider-owned educational activity highlighted the need to tailor depth to the patient in front of you and to treat reinforcement as a shared team responsibility (oncology discussion, certified activity).
The evidence here is oncology-heavy, and one source is provider-owned, so this is better read as a credible design need than a broad consensus claim. But the learning implication is portable: communication training works better when it teaches adaptation and reinforcement, not just a better bedside script.
