The Cases That Don’t Fit Cleanly

AI looks most credible in CME when it repackages and tailors existing content under explicit human review, not when it substitutes for scientific judgment.
Inside CME, the clearest near-term AI use case is adapting existing content under human review. This week’s evidence points to format conversion, audience tailoring, and accessibility work as the most credible early deployment lane for providers, though much of that evidence comes from society and publishing-adjacent voices rather than broad clinician conversation.
Across this week’s sources, the most concrete AI use case was not new scientific interpretation. It was turning existing material into other usable forms: shorter summaries, plain-language versions, audience-tailored adaptations, and other derivative outputs, with humans still responsible for review, fact-checking, and final ownership. That pattern appeared in a publishing-focused discussion of AI-supported content conversion and plain-language summaries, a conference-linked discussion of AI as support rather than replacement, and one independent clinician voice that also kept the human checkpoint central (Write Medicine, Healthcare Unfiltered, X video).
For CME providers, that turns a broad AI debate into a narrower operating decision. If adaptation is the first trusted use case, teams can stop treating AI policy as one undifferentiated question. They can separate derivative production tasks from scientific interpretation and set different controls for each. This also extends our earlier brief on clinicians asking harder questions about AI than accuracy: the issue here is less clinical use and more where AI can sit inside the CME production chain without displacing expert judgment.
Some examples came from oncology and hematology ecosystems, but the implication travels because the issue is production method, not disease content. The caveat is that this remains partly a provider- and publisher-led pattern, with limited independent clinician corroboration. The practical question for CME teams is straightforward: which parts of your workflow are truly derivative, and are you prepared to make the human review step visible?
A second, more tentative theme this week was that communication education becomes more credible when it follows the patient journey instead of teaching ideal phrasing in isolation. One CPD-oriented conversation argued for empathy, cultural competence, and whole-journey context as core design elements, while a hematology consent discussion made the gap concrete: families under time pressure may sign forms based more on trust and urgency than on full understanding (The Alliance Podcast, HemaSphere Podcast).
For CME providers, the point is not to add a generic soft-skills layer. It is to design communication education around comprehension limits, family overload, and culturally shaped trust at the moments when decisions actually happen. If an activity teaches what the clinician should say but not what the patient and family can realistically hear, retain, or question, it may sound polished without being very usable.
This evidence base is modest, and it should not be read as broad clinician demand. One source also reflects a patient-support perspective, which is useful but should be named as such. The design question for providers is concrete: are your communication activities simulating real decision conditions, or just rehearsing the script?
