What Clinicians Now Want From AI Education

The clearest public signal was that AI education is moving past the launch decision and into oversight after deployment. The support is credible but not broad grassroots clinician conversation alone; it comes mainly from an FDA-led journal discussion plus specialty operational examples in radiology and hematology, with implications that extend beyond those fields.
The clearest change in the source material was not another argument about whether clinicians should trust AI. It was a more operational question: once an AI-enabled tool is in use, who monitors it, who documents problems, and who owns the response when real-world performance drifts from what looked acceptable in validation? In a JAMA-hosted conversation with FDA leadership, AI was framed as something that needs ongoing post-market monitoring because clinical environments change and algorithms can behave differently in practice than they did before deployment. Specialty discussions in radiology and hematology diagnostics reinforced the same point from the workflow side: reliability, liability, and robustness have to be judged inside local operating conditions.
For CME providers, that matters because much current AI programming still treats education as a pre-adoption hurdle. If organizations are already deploying tools, the learning need shifts to stewardship: drift, local validation, escalation paths, documentation, accountability handoffs, and setting-specific fit. That builds on our earlier brief about AI use at the point of care, but the emphasis here is what teams must manage after implementation, not whether the tool seems useful at first encounter.
The operator question for CME teams is simple: if your AI curriculum launched today, would it teach people how to manage a deployed system over time, or mostly how to decide whether they are comfortable trying it?
A second, narrower theme came from educator- and program-led sources rather than broad clinician demand, but the design implication is useful. In a radiology education discussion, the case was made that non-radiologists do not need specialist interpretive nuance as much as they need help with the decisions that are actually theirs: choosing the right test, understanding safety and contrast issues, weighing economics, and knowing the next step (source). A hematology programming discussion made a similar argument in a conference context, emphasizing referral and therapy-navigation questions over specialist detail (source).
This remains an emerging, specialty-led signal and should not be overstated as market-wide consensus. Still, for CME providers serving mixed audiences, it is a useful design check: disease-topic segmentation is often too blunt. A primary care clinician, APP, hospitalist, or general specialist may touch a specialty area without needing specialist-depth content. What they need is clear guidance on the decisions they actually own.
The practical implication: before building or marketing a mixed-audience activity, identify what each learner segment is responsible for deciding, and cut specialist detail that does not change that decision.
