CME Needs Narrower AI Training and Stronger Formats

Clinicians were describing AI tools that are easy to launch but not yet safe to trust without review. In one ambient documentation thread, the tool was fast and simple to use, but still produced fragmented follow-up notes, followed patient tangents, and failed to incorporate technical context such as imaging and pathology details (source). Oncology examples were prominent this week, but the oversight principle is broader: any workflow that inserts AI into documentation or decision support now needs a visible human checkpoint.
The clinician conversation has moved past basic AI literacy. The sharper question is what has to happen before an AI output becomes part of a note, a recommendation, or a patient-facing decision.
One oncology-focused AI discussion framed the current risk less around distant fears of sentient systems and more around bias, training data, transparency, validation, and keeping a human in the loop (source). That matters for CME because many AI modules still spend too much time defining models and too little time rehearsing the moment of use: What evidence is missing? What patient group may be underrepresented? What part of the output requires clinician correction? When does the clinician stop and escalate?
A separate oncology and medical education post highlighted workflow automation, clinical decision support, and federated learning as active areas of AI discussion (source). Pair that with the ambient documentation thread, and the lesson is clear: adoption is not the hard endpoint. The hard endpoint is whether clinicians can reliably inspect, modify, and document their reliance on the tool under normal time pressure.
This extends an earlier brief on ambient AI and learner co-design, where workflow integration was the main signal. This week, the conversation added a governance layer. For CME teams, the question is no longer, “Do clinicians understand AI?” It is, “Can they show the steps they use before trusting it?”
If an AI activity ends when learners can describe the technology, it is stopping too early. The clinician need is moving toward documented judgment: how to evaluate the output, how to detect bias, how to preserve patient context, and how to decide when the machine should not be followed. The next useful AI curriculum will make that review step observable.
