In an educator discussion of the ARCH model—Ask and allow self-assessment, Reinforce, Confirm, Help plan—the key point was not that feedback needs another acronym. It was that feedback works differently when the learner has to assess performance, hear reinforcement and correction, and leave with a specific improvement plan.
The Faculty Forward episode emphasized that this can happen in a short hallway exchange after a patient encounter, not only in formal debriefs. That matters for CME because faculty-development curricula often teach what good feedback sounds like, but not how to make the learner do the cognitive work. The model’s emphasis on psychological safety, wait time, and learner-authored improvement plans turns feedback into a habit-building interaction.
The caveat is important: this is a single educator source, not broad clinician corroboration. But it fits a larger provider problem we covered in an earlier brief on defining the educational destination before choosing the route. If the destination is self-directed improvement, then the activity has to measure more than whether faculty delivered feedback. It should ask whether learners can identify what they did well, what needs correction, and what they will do next.
A separate MAPS/Wiley discussion made a parallel argument about publication impact: clinical change does not happen just because a paper exists. The episode framed the problem as volume and usability, noting a landscape of roughly 30,000 medical journals and an estimated 2 million articles a year, then argued for formats such as plain-language summaries, video, audio, infographics, accredited learning, and rights-cleared reuse to help clinicians find and apply research.
This is a publisher and medical-affairs perspective, so CME providers should not treat it as independent clinician consensus. Still, the discussion of practice-changing publication strategy is useful because it pushes CME planning upstream. If CME is part of the path from research to implementation, dissemination questions belong in the needs assessment: who needs the deep dive, who needs a short explanation, which channels fit the audience, what permissions are required, and what outcome will prove the material changed more than awareness?
The provider implication is operational. A publication-derived activity should not begin with “turn this paper into CME.” It should begin with: what clinician action should this evidence support, which format will make that action easier, and how will the team document movement toward practice change?
This week’s narrow evidence points to a useful discipline: do not stop at delivering the message. Whether the message is feedback from a preceptor or evidence from a publication, CME teams should design the moment when the clinician turns it into a specific next step. That is where learning becomes easier to measure—and harder to ignore.
