CME Can’t Assume Fairness Is Obvious Anymore

Some terms CME providers treat as universal may not travel well. This week’s clearest signal is that international education works less like exported U.S. content and more like local product design, though the evidence is still concentrated in a single provider-facing podcast rather than broad clinician corroboration.
In The Alliance Podcast, the argument was straightforward: providers should not assume that a U.S.-built activity, platform, or access model will work in another geography just because the topic is relevant. The source tied effectiveness to local needs assessment, local collaboration, and delivery choices based on how learners in that setting actually find and use education.
The sharper point was about credibility language. Terms such as independent, non-promotional, accredited, and ineligible company were described as country-specific in meaning, or not meaningful at all without explanation. That pushes localization beyond translation into learner-facing trust language, supporter explanations, survey wording, and compliance communications. It also extends an earlier brief on CME value shifting from content toward design fit: in international programs, that fit may include the credibility vocabulary itself.
This is not broad market consensus, and it matters most to providers running or planning international CME. But the implication is concrete: before entering a market, identify which parts of the offering still assume U.S. norms about access, partner roles, accreditation, and disclosure language.
A Write Medicine podcast episode argued that interprofessional, interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and team-based are not interchangeable labels. For CME teams, the practical point is that collaboration learning can get diluted when developers collapse distinct professional viewpoints into one blended discussion.
That matters because many activities are marketed as care-team education while using generic cases, generic prompts, and generic assessments. The source’s design argument was that stronger interprofessional learning often sits in the differences: what a physician notices, what a physical therapist notices, what a nurse or pharmacist prioritizes, and how those views are reconciled in care.
The evidence here is thinner and single-source, so this is better treated as informed design guidance than a proven field-wide shift. Still, it creates a useful test: if an activity is labeled interprofessional, where do role-specific perspectives actually appear in the case, facilitation plan, and outcomes measures?
