CME Can’t Assume Fairness Is Obvious Anymore

A narrow but useful signal this week: educational value is shifting from content delivery alone toward helping clinicians interpret, apply, and discuss real-world dilemmas.
This week’s clearest signal is that some education leaders and conference discussions are assigning more value to learning that helps clinicians interpret, apply, and work through difficult decisions, not just receive updates. The evidence is narrow—one leadership conversation plus one conference ecosystem—so this is best treated as an emerging design direction, not a broad clinician consensus.
In an ACC-linked conversation on physician education, the critique was not simply that long lectures are inconvenient; it was that facts are easier to access, while the harder task is turning information into competent care (source). The implication is not that lectures are obsolete. It is that compressing content is not the same as redesigning the learning task. For CME teams, the question is practical: if learners can get the update elsewhere, where in your activity do they work through the ambiguous part?

But it is a useful operational lesson for CME providers serving faculty-development, assessment-heavy, or transition-to-practice programs. Assessment architecture alone does not produce learning. If advisors cannot interpret the data, run a developmental conversation, and identify a next step, the system produces monitoring more than growth.
The decision for CME teams is whether a competency-focused program stops at frameworks and dashboards, or also equips faculty to coach with the information it generates.
