Peer Networks May Be the Missing Layer in Practice Change

For workflow and safety change, this week's signal favors longitudinal support with embedded measurement over standalone sessions.
When the goal is workflow, safety, or system change, a one-off session may be too small a unit of education. In this week’s narrow but useful evidence set, complex practice-change efforts looked better suited to longitudinal support with coaching and embedded measurement than to standalone sessions alone.
A CPD-focused discussion this week argued that one-off education can raise awareness yet still leave clinicians stuck when the real problem is workflow, safety, or system change. In the featured example, test-results follow-up improved only after the learning design expanded beyond a workshop into reflection, one-to-one coaching, peer exchange, and measures collected throughout the process rather than added at the end (JCEHP Emerging Best Practices in CPD).
This is one source, so it is better read as an expert design signal than as broad clinician consensus. But it sharpens the progression from our earlier brief on why the session is no longer the whole product: if providers want behavior or system change, they may need to scope the offering as a learning journey rather than an event.
For CME teams, the implication is scoping discipline. Not every topic needs a longitudinal build. But if the stated objective is to change a messy practice pattern, reduce risk, or improve a team-dependent process, reinforcement and measurement should be planned at launch rather than appended later. The decision point before development starts is simple: is this an update, or is it a change program?
The week’s AI evidence did not justify another broad section on trust or transformation. What it did suggest, directionally, was a narrower point: clinicians may be more receptive to AI framed around supervised, low-risk information tasks such as summarization, categorization, and record organization, with explicit accountability for what gets reviewed and by whom (AI and Healthcare, AI and Healthcare, Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network).
This is a continuity section, not a new lead trend, and the source base is fragile: the material comes from unverified YouTube sources with limited independent clinician confirmation. Even so, the provider implication is fairly clear. AI learning may work better when it stops teaching "AI" as a category and instead teaches task boundaries, supervision, monitoring, and non-use cases.
If a CME provider includes AI, the sharper question is not whether clinicians need more AI awareness. It is whether the activity specifies one acceptable task class, the review steps around it, and the point where automation should stop.
