CME Value Is Moving From Content to Design

A conference keynote recap this week argued that clinicians make fewer errors and adopt change more reliably when learning happens through structured peer networks rather than one-off expert persuasion (Write Medicine). That is a stronger claim than the usual case for community or engagement. It treats peer interaction as part of the change mechanism, not as a nice extra after the content is delivered.
The evidence is still thin: one recap source, not broad independent clinician conversation. But the implication for CME providers is concrete. If the goal is adoption, error reduction, or sustained practice change, then a lecture plus handout may be the wrong unit of design. Cohort discussion, facilitated case exchange, peer feedback, and follow-up sessions start to look less like add-ons and more like part of the intervention.
That also affects outcomes planning. Teams should ask whether they are measuring information uptake while claiming behavior change. If peer-processing elements are added, can the outcomes plan test adoption rather than attendance or satisfaction alone?

That matters because many AI sessions still default to what the tools can do. The more useful educational question is whether learners are being taught to recognize failure modes, question outputs, and decide when AI use is inappropriate. This too is a narrow signal, supported by a single conference recap. Still, it gives CME teams a practical test: are AI activities teaching capability, or are they teaching judgment? If the answer is mostly capability, the design may be lagging the need.
