Oncologists Are Already Preferring Curated AI Over General LLMs

Learners are not just asking how to use AI. They want training that protects autonomy, detects bias, and rehearses when to override the machine.
Learners and faculty are naming AI as a threat to clinical autonomy and human connection, not just a tool they need to learn. The strongest evidence this week comes from a podcast summary of the Chan, Young, and Parekh meta-ethnography that cautions, “Please note that this podcast was generated using artificial intelligence.”
The useful signal this week is not that medical learners are anxious about AI. It is the specificity of the anxiety. In the meta-ethnography summarized by Medical Education Podcasts, students and faculty described AI as both useful and disruptive: useful for pattern recognition and administrative burden, disruptive when it threatens empathy, clinical autonomy, accountability, and the ability to explain a recommendation.
Clinician conversation around AI literacy pointed in the same direction. A practicing physician shared a review on AI literacy among healthcare professionals and students in the Americas, framing the issue as clinicians and trainees needing tools to keep up. An oncology education reflection around ASCO26 likewise framed the field as moving from older memory aids toward education in the age of AI. The examples include oncology and other data-intensive fields, but the provider implication is broader: AI education is no longer only about knowing what the tool can do.
For CME teams, the curriculum question is becoming sharper. Does the activity teach clinicians to preserve judgment when the machine is plausible, fast, and wrong? We saw a related pattern in an earlier brief arguing that AI literacy needs failure drills, not feature tours. This week’s evidence adds the identity layer: learners are not only worried about accuracy; they are worried about becoming passive overseers of opaque systems.
That changes the shape of useful education. Hybrid AI training should put clinicians in cases where an AI output conflicts with clinical judgment, patient context, equity concerns, or explainability limits. Learners should practice checking the input data, naming possible bias, deciding whether the recommendation can be defended to a patient, and documenting why they accepted or rejected it. Faculty then need to debrief the reasoning, not merely reveal whether the AI was right.
The faculty-development need is just as concrete. If educators treat machine learning as a faster calculator, they cannot credibly teach black-box risk, bias detection, or supervised handoff. The question for CME teams is simple: can your current AI education show a clinician exactly how to disagree with the machine?
AI literacy should not sit only in the technology-update bucket. The stronger framing is clinical judgment under machine influence. If an activity measures whether learners can define algorithmic bias but never asks them to challenge an AI recommendation, it may miss the real fear in the learner conversation.
