Accreditation expectations are converting AI documentation from optional practice into a compliance necessity for CME providers. A Write Medicine episode cited a 264-freelancer survey in which workflow-focused AI training was the top request at 53%. The evidence is drawn from CME-provider and journal perspectives rather than direct clinician conversations, yet the operational implication is immediate: AI-assisted work must now be explainable before it can be trusted.

The strongest signal came from CME and medical-writing operations. Professionals are using AI for brainstorming, literature orientation, summarization, drafting support, and quality checks, but many cannot yet describe a consistent process with stages, decision rules, verification steps, and disclosure language. That distinction matters because accreditation guidance is beginning to turn AI documentation into something more concrete than a local best practice. A provider that cannot show how AI was used, what was checked, what was excluded, and what was disclosed may have trouble defending the integrity of an activity even when the final content is accurate.
This extends a related pattern we saw in an earlier brief on AI collaboration and teaching workflow skills, but the center of gravity has moved. The question is no longer only whether clinicians can use AI well. It is whether CME teams can govern their own AI-assisted production work.
For CME teams, the near-term test is simple: could a writer, editor, outcomes lead, or faculty reviewer reconstruct the AI path behind a deliverable without relying on memory?
A second signal came from NEJM This Week, which summarized a perspective on AI-enabled precision education systems. The premise is that one-time teaching and assessment do not reliably account for variation in individual trainee experience. AI systems may help identify learning gaps, generate assessments, provide feedback, connect data to competency frameworks, and support individualized coaching. (source)
For CME providers, the opportunity is not simply “personalization.” Adaptive learning changes who has to supervise the learning pathway. Faculty may need to understand when an AI-generated assessment is appropriate, when feedback needs human review, how learner data maps to competency claims, and where safeguards are required before the system starts steering education.
This remains an emerging journal-perspective signal, not evidence of broad clinician demand. But it points to a practical boundary for pilots: do not evaluate an adaptive platform only by learner experience or content coverage. Evaluate whether faculty can audit the pathway, challenge the system’s recommendations, and explain why the learner was moved in a particular direction.
AI in CME is becoming less a question of enthusiasm and more a question of evidence. Providers do not need elaborate governance theater, but they do need workflows that survive scrutiny. The credible AI-enabled CME team will be the one that can show its work: how the content was built, how outputs were checked, how learners were guided, and where human judgment remained accountable.
