A 7-Step Needs-Assessment Workflow That Turns Insight Into Tight Agendas

Clinicians demand AI copilots and scribes that disappear into workflow rather than add clicks. CME must shift from tool demos to rehearsal of integration, verification, and escalation.
The week’s clearest AI signal was workflow friction: clinicians are asking for AI that sits inside the work, not beside it. The strongest examples came from radiology, Hem/Onc, and medical education, but the provider implication is broader: AI education has to teach how clinicians will use, verify, and override tools during real work.
A sponsored RSNA radiology discussion put the workflow demand plainly: radiologists worry about extra clicks and distractions, and the ideal copilot is embedded into the reading environment, routing cases, surfacing findings, automating comparisons, and helping reports without forcing users into separate applications. Because this source is product-adjacent, the details should not be read as broad consensus. The useful signal is the shape of the expectation: AI should reduce task load before it asks for attention.
A Hem/Onc physician’s survey invitation on AI scribes points in the same direction from another workflow: adoption is being studied through perceived benefits, concerns, and day-to-day use, not just attitudes toward the technology. For CME teams, that means “AI in practice” is not a single learning need. A scribe, a worklist copilot, and a guideline-augmented decision tool each create different moments where clinicians must decide what to trust, what to check, and when to step in.
Medical education added a second warning. In a Medical Education audio paper, educators could not reliably distinguish student-authored reflections from GenAI-authored reflections, and the authors argued against making detection the center of the response. That matters for CME because many AI literacy efforts still lean toward awareness, risk, and policy. The harder educational task is rehearsal: ask learners to use AI output, critique it, correct it, and explain the boundary between assistance and clinical judgment.
This sharpens an earlier brief on clinicians naming the real barriers to AI adoption in practice. The barrier is not only whether clinicians understand AI. It is whether the learning experience prepares them for the point of use: where the alert appears, what evidence is visible, what the clinician must verify, and what action follows if the tool is wrong or incomplete. One question for CME teams: do your AI activities teach the tool, or do they teach the moment when the clinician has to work with it?
If an AI curriculum starts with capabilities and ends with a policy checklist, it may miss the point clinicians are now naming. The closer test is whether a learner can use AI without losing the thread of care: no unnecessary clicks, clear verification, and a practiced habit of knowing when the machine should stay quiet.
